The Bernie Grant Arts Centre and New Deal of the Mind are launching “The Next Chapter” – a project to record the stories of those affected by the riots in Tottenham and document the rebuilding process.
The Next Chapter’s aim is to assist in healing Tottenham by providing an open, neutral space where residents can freely express their thoughts about the recent disturbances in the area.
Building on the success of the History Shop in Exmouth Market earlier in the month, a “story booth” will be set up at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre where people can come and record their stories and views. Hundreds of local people will be invited to the Bernie Grant Arts Centre to share their thoughts. The project will work with young people from the community, as well as shopkeepers, Residents Associations, Youth Offending Teams, and people who suffered directly as a result of the violence.
The Next Chapter is the final phase of The Great Book of Tottenham project undertaken in collaboration with New Deal of the Mind. The project’s aim is to record the lives of the people of Tottenham over a period of one year, using photography, video, music, verbatim recordings, testimony, reflections, attitudes, hopes and fears for the future – to celebrate Tottenham, street by street. The Great Book of Tottenham successfully employed over 20 local young people who were previously claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance for six months or more. It is a testament to the strong community in Tottenham as well as a tribute to the efforts of a group of local young people who dedicated their time to the project. The project has already attracted attention and has been mentioned in Al Jazeera English.
Martin Bright, founder of New Deal of the Mind, said “we’ve been proud to work with the Bernie Grant Arts Centre on its groundbreaking Great Book of Tottenham project which put local young people back to work recording stories and producing photographic portraits of the community. We believe the Next Chapter will help towards an understanding of why the riots took place and help build the cohesion necessary to stop it happening again.”
John Baraldi, chief executive of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, said “The Great Book of Tottenham project, which has been in progress since last year, is already an incredibly positive picture of a diverse and ever-changing area of London. The Next Chapter will give that community the voice that it needs to be at the centre of the conversation about recent events and the route towards a brighter future.”
The story booth will be open at Bernie Grant Arts Centre from Tuesday 23 August. Contact Dan Lines firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
