Unemployment continues to rise.The jobless total has hit a 14-year high, according to government figures released today. Nearly one million young people are out of work.
There are nearly 2.5 million people now unemployed, of which 700,000 are aged 18 to 24. Urgent action is needed. As this summer’s school leavers and university graduates enter the still shrinking job market, unemployment levels will rise even further.
The jobless total is expected to is hit three million by next year. Some doomsayers estimate the figure to be closer to four million.
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has been vocal in his defence of the Government’s strategies for economic recovery. Even he however has admitted that such levels of unemployment are “unacceptable”.
