Budget 2009: Promoting industries with a “strong future demand”
The Budget is good news for New Deal of the Mind.
Has the Chancellor has been doing his New Deal of the Mind homework? He was correct to suggest that we stand to create a “lost generation” of young people if we don’t find them a job fast. He talked about encouraging industries with a “strong future demand” and later mentioned the significance of the creative industries.
His promise of a £250million funding injection to help young people get work experience will hopefully go some way to irrigating the rather arid employment landscape that faces current graduates.
The support for every 16-and-17 year old wishing to stay in education or training is an interesting development. Let’s just hope there are some jobs waiting for them when they finally enter the job market.
From January 2010, all under-25s unemployed for a year are to be offered a job or training place. It’s not yet entirely clear how easy it will be to persuade companies to play ball. The devil, as ever, will be in the detail.
